In this issue of Edpsy.org.uk, Educational Psychologists Claire McGuiggan and Peter D’Lima make the case for a stronger commitment to freedom of speech in schools. Their words are especially relevant at a time when some schools are promoting over -zealous policing of books and language:
Create a culture within a school or organisation that demonstrates the belief that people are able to tolerate feelings of discomfort around ideas that do not align with their own and avoid language which reinforces cognitive distortions that children and young people are unsafe and unable to cope with any negative emotion which may arise within a difficult or contentious discussion.
