Islamophobia: The Accusation that Silences Dissent
In the autumn of 2020, French school teacher Samuel Paty was brutally murdered by an Islamist extremist outside the school where he taught. DDU supporters were shocked by the murder itself, but also by the stunning silence of our political and cultural elites here in the UK, with a few notable exceptions. Any expressions of horror, so widely articulated in the case of George Floyd, were conspicuous by their absence. DDU wrote a letter in solidarity with the French people, organised a public event to discuss the problems of double standards and self-censorship that arise when fear of giving offence is the major concern and produced a short film exploring the misuse of the term ‘Islamophobia’ to silence dissenting voices.
