Lambeth Mural Campaign
In October 2021, DDU supporter and Lambeth resident Daniel Fitzgerald contacted us about plans for a publicly funded art group, supported by Lambeth Council, to paint a mural celebrating the 1980s Brixton riots on the wall of the flats where he lived. Residents were not consulted about the decision to turn their home into a politically partisan billboard and DDU supported their campaign for democratic accountability. We launched a petition against the mural that garnered 250 signatures and Daniel was interviewed by TalkRadio’s Julia Hartley-Brewer.
The campaign was a huge success, with the council dropping the mural project altogether and apologising for their failure to consult residents.
